So you want to travel the world, but you’re too broke to do it, huh? Sucks. You could get a job and save all your money. You could make a strict budget and sock away every dime you can. You could just give up and wait until you retire in 1,000 years. But who wants to do any of that? You want to travel now. But don’t give up yet, there’s a much easier way to get the money you need to travel: your parents. After all, what’s the point of having parents if they’re not going to give you money every now and then? Am I right?
Now, there are several ways to get money out of your parents. Everyone is different, so the trick to traveling the world on your parents’ dime is to know how to approach it with them. So here are five of the most common ways to get money out of mom and dad to travel:
Ask Your Parents for Money
The easiest, well, at least most straight forward, way to get travel money from your parents is to flat out ask. What’s the worst that can happen, they say, “no?” Well, yes. And that would be a terrible outcome.
Use Your Parents’ Miles
Maybe your parents won’t just flat out give you money to travel. But maybe you can get something less tangible and equally valuable out of them: miles. Maybe your dad travels for work and banks miles. Maybe your mom is saving hers for a trip to a Sandal’s Resort one day. But chances are that day will never come anyways. So ask your parents if they can book a flight with their miles. And maybe a week in a hotel room too.
Pretend it’s Educational
If your parents won’t just give you money to travel, change your story and lay on the guilt trip. If you turn your travel into a study abroad program, overseas volunteer work, or mission trip spreading the world of God your parents can’t refuse. Once you’re out of the country you don’t have to go to class or work, they’ll never know. You get free travel, your parents think they have an exemplary son or daughter. Win. Win.
Sell Things Your Parents Bought
Sometimes you just have to go behind your parents back and get the money out of them some other way. Did they get you a car so you can drive to school and work? Sell it at CarMax. Do they have some old records or baseball cards rotting away in the attic? Sell them on eBay. By the time they find out, you’ll be halfway around the world.
Steal the Money from Your Parents
When all else fails: steal. Find your dad’s checkbook and write yourself a check. Dip into that jar of bills your mom stashes at the back of her closet for a rainy day. You know the one. Your parents owe you that money, and you know it’s the only way you’ll be able to afford to travel.
Do you plan to travel around the world on your parents’ dime? What technique will you be using?
